What the calculator shows

The full picture — not just the weekly figure

It weighs everything renting and buying actually cost over time, so you can decide with real numbers instead of a gut feeling.

Total cost over time

Rent (with increases) vs buying all-in — repayments, rates, maintenance and costs.

The crossover point

The year buying typically gets ahead of renting for your situation.

Equity you'd build

What you'd own over time — versus rent paid to a landlord with nothing to show.

An honest answer

Sometimes renting genuinely wins. If it does for you, we'll say so.

Straight talk

Buying isn't always the right move

If you might move within a few years, or the costs outweigh the upside, renting can be the smarter call. The calculator shows you which way the numbers lean — and Peter will give it to you straight.

Good to know

Rent vs buy, answered

Is buying always better than renting?
No. It depends on how long you'll stay, the costs of buying, and how prices and rents move. Over shorter timeframes renting can come out ahead; over longer ones, owning often does. The calculator shows which way it leans for your numbers.
What costs does the comparison include?
On the buying side: loan repayments and interest, upfront purchase costs, council rates, insurance and maintenance. On the renting side: your rent and typical annual increases. It then compares the total position over time, including equity built.
I don't have a big deposit — can I still buy?
Possibly. Many buyers get in with less than 20%, and first home buyers may access low-deposit schemes and grants. See our first home buyer tools or talk to Peter.
Is this financial advice?
No — it's an indicative comparison and general information only, not financial or credit advice. It doesn't account for your full circumstances. See our terms.
